Google Chrome has the fastest growth of all browsers and currently has over 160 million active users. That puts them at over 10 percent of the total web population in the U.S. and a substantially larger portion overseas. Part of the reason for the broad adoption of the fledgling browser is the release of frequent new features; Google Chrome is on a six week release cycle. The most recent version of Google Chrome, version 12, just went "stable" and will be distributed to users in the next few days.
The features included have been announced independently over the course of the last few weeks, but the details have been finalized and a few key privacy specifications have been included. Here are the items of greatest note:- The ability to delete LSO (locally stored objects) from Flash is now live. You could previously delete LSO data only from the Adobe Flash website.
- Google has fully integrated the Safe Browsing API (as expected). This service, previously available as a stand-alone service from Google, will notify users when they seem to be visiting a malicious site or downloading malicious software. The update, however, comes in response to privacy concerns brought up when Google announced the integration: Google will have no record of what sites you see, what files you attempt to download, or anything else that's blocked by the API.
- Graphics have been boosted yet again. This time it comes in the form of support for 3D CSS. 3D CSS is a part of the CSS 3 functionality and allows for rapid interaction with 3D objects and media. This is a great boon for applications, especially in the gaming and media arena.
Chrome users will see the update option by late June, but can also visit the Chrome download page to update to version 12 sooner.
